Sítio Santa Rita sits in Caparaó, a mountainous coffee-growing region on the border of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, Brazil.
Tarcísio Lacerda planted his first coffee trees there in 1972. Years later, his son Jhone began looking more closely at how the family grew, processed and tasted their coffee, searching for ways to improve quality and understand what each lot could become.
That curiosity still shapes the way they work today.
The family have developed equipment to help dry microlots in Caparaó’s humid climate, experimented with fermentation and processing, and introduced agroforestry on the farm. Jhone has also shared techniques and coffee knowledge with other producers in the region.
Today, Santa Rita brings several parts of coffee together in one place, from growing and processing to roasting and hospitality. Tarcísio, Jhone and their family continue to learn from what they grow, changing things, testing things and paying attention to the results.
Our current SALTWATER coffee is a Red Catuaí from Sítio Santa Rita, grown at 950 metres and pulped natural processed.
It’s a good reminder that experience and curiosity don’t have to be opposites. Sometimes, knowing something well is exactly what makes you want to look closer.
